"Once Upon A Time" Ltd. Ed. 1000 By Cheryll Arnold Set back in the woods, just off that old country back road lies the grist mill. And, once upon a time, here was the place where the town's folk would come to buy their flour, corn meal and buck wheat for the evening meal. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the clunking of the heavy wheel and the splashing of the cold mountain water as it echoes through the forest. |
"Stone Mtn. Mercantile" Ltd. Ed. 1200 By Jeff Arnold Stop by the Mercantile and pick up chicken feed, a box of nails, and an RC Cola. Stone. Mtn. Mercantile sells a little of everything and if they don't have it-they can get it! The chair on the front porch awaits the men folk who talk about how to fix that fence row- but somehow, never get around to it. |

Our Pen & Ink Process It all starts with an idea or concept of an image we would like to do. First, we do some research by looking at photos or other art works that deal with the same subject. We hardly ever go by an exact photo-as we like to create the "ideal" country living setting by combining real places with our imagination. Then we make several very rough pencil sketches to determine composition, object placement and perspective. When we have one that is acceptable to what we want to create, we do a final sketch. However, this final sketch is just one for reference for the final artwork. Now we are ready to start on the final piece by selecting the right paper: usually we use "Bristol - smooth". Then we start on the most tedious tasks; the final drawing. We have to use a very light pencil, usually a 4H. We try not to erase as much as possible so that it won't scar the paper and later cause the ink to "bleed". A kneaded eraser works best as it only picks up the graphite without scarring the paper surface. Once the final drawing is complete, and the paper properly secured to a drawing board the Pen & Ink process can begin. We may use a rapidiograph pen or dip-style fountain quill and ink well. In any case ,before you touch the pen to your final drawing each time you must blot the ink on a separate sheet of paper to avoid ink run off that can ruin a picture. Remember, that once ink is down on the page, it can never be removed. If you make a mistake, you have to start all over again! Most of our Pen & Ink art takes weeks to complete, even if we work on it every day. During these weeks you have to be very careful of your drawing and treat it as though it were made of gold. Don't sit it down where something can spill on it, watch out for fingerprints, even a sneeze is a potential hazard! Now that we are finished, we carefully take up the drawing and place in a folder that is much larger than the image to protect the corners of the paper. Now, we take it to the publisher, get it printed to the specified edition, and the our Pen & Ink art prints are ready for you and your home decor! |
